The Loveland Tigers (2-2) faced the Mason Comets (2-2) last Friday night in an important game in conference play. Mason prepared for the game with hopes of a second consecutive FAVC Championship while Loveland was hoping for a much needed victory. Both teams were evenly matched.
The first half was full of a series of miscues by both teams. In the first quarter, both teams were heavily penalized effecting the ability to sustain scoring drives. Sophomore Michael Morrison, recovered a fumble for Loveland in the first quarter but Loveland was unable to score. Mason Junior Brian Porter, rushed for over 20 yards on a series of downs but, again, a penalty upset Mason's scoring drive which resulted in a field goal by Mason's Chris Collins. On Loveland's next scoring drive, Loveland Senior Chris Grant had a breakaway for 50 yards. Mason was able to hold the Tigers again without scoring. At the end of the first quarter, Mason led 3-0.
Loveland received a punt from Mason to begin the 2nd quarter. Again, Chris Grant, #10, was able to bring the ball to the Mason seventeen yard line. Unfortunately, in the very next down, Loveland attempted a reverse and Mason's defense was not fooled. As a result, Senior Brian Wexler attempted and completed a 40 yard field goal with ten minutes remaining in the first half. On Mason's next drive, Ryan Britenriker, helped Mason move the ball to the Loveland 40 yard line. Mason attempted a reverse play and Jarryd Armstrong, a senior, moved the ball to the Loveland 29 yard line. Mason Quarterback, Craig Mustard, passed again to Britenriker who moved the ball to the Loveland 9 yard line. On the next play, Mustard scored running into the end zone with forward blocking by Senior Kyle Nagenagast. At the end of the first half, Mason led 10-3.
Loveland controlled the football the majority of the second half. Mason's defense stopped the Tigers during critical drives holding the scoring in the second half to only three points. Mason's Junior Jake Lewis stopped the first Loveland attempt to score at the beginning of the third quarter. Loveland continue to play tough defensively. Brady Minturn, Patrick Davis, Tony Fields and Josh Pickle providing the Tigers with great field position during the 3rd quarter. Mason QB Mustard was caught briefly in the end zone but was able to toss the ball to Nagengast before being sacked to avoid a safety.
During the next drive, Loveland, QB AJ Forsythe, completed several passes to Robbie Wolfram and TJ Maus to move the ball to the Mason six yard line. Again, an illegal procedure penalty moved the Tigers back to the eleven yard line and on the next play, AJ Forsythe was sacked for another 10 yard loss. Brian Wexler kicked a 33 yard field goal and the score was 10-6 with 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Mason managed the clock and the ball during much of the fourth quarter. Both defensive units played strongly causing the offensive teams to turn the ball over in four downs. Neither team was able to move the ball into scoring position. With 22 seconds left to play, Loveland had one last opportunity to score. An incomplete pass from AJ Forsthye to Robbie Wolfram ended the game. Mason kept their hopes alive for another FAVC championship, while Loveland suffered another disappointing defeat.
