LOVELAND, OHIO - Last year, the Loveland and Sycamore high school volleyball teams collaborated to convert a regular season varsity match into a breast cancer awareness event.
With approval from the Ohio High School Athletic Association, the players and referees wore custom pink shirts and the teams were allowed to fabricate a special “halftime” which consisted of funny games with fan involvement.
Over 900 pink t-shirts were sold in advance and discounted admission was offered to anyone wearing pink; students got into the game held in Sycamore's gym free, and adults paid $4 vs. the normal $6 admission price. Funds and excitement were also raised through a bake sale, raffle, and selling split-the-pot tickets. The schools buzzed with pink on game day as the players, students and staff wore pink, and pink decorations hung throughout the school's halls.
Attendance exceeded 1000 fans (vs. the normal 50-75) and over $4000 was raised at this one game for breast cancer research. Enthusiasm to host VOLLEY FOR THE CURE the next season, immediately followed.
Each high school in Ohio that plays interscholastic volleyball was challenged to dedicate one home volleyball match to promote breast cancer education, awareness and fundraising. Close to 300 Ohio high schools (with multiple teams) are participating to date.
The purpose of this event is to increase awareness of breast cancer among high school students, staff and the community, and to raise funds for the Susan G Komen Foundation.
