Adam Engel. Those are the two words that best describe the Loveland Tigers win on Friday night over the Kings Knights 41-14.
The Tigers played great defense all night holding Kings to just 14 points, and also had four tackles for losses, that led Loveland to their second consecutive win - and largest margin of victory in 3 years. The Tigers defense was led by seniors Brandon Burks, and Andrew Newbold who both ended the game with 6 tackles. The Tigers defense had a season high 12 different players record a defensive stat. Brandon Burks, Isaac Spence, Jake Cornett, and Kyle Seig all recorded tackles for a loss. Zach Elias, and Adam Engel combined for two interceptions for the Tigers as well. Loveland head coach Andrew Marlatt said “We played very good defense at times but are still struggling with getting off blocks consistently and maintaining leverage and gap responsibility - especially along the interior of our defensive line. The secondary played very well in terms of run support and against the pass.”
Now, back to that “Adam Engel” guy. All he did was rush for 133 yards on only 10 carries. Engel had three touchdown rushes from 2, 26, and 65 yards. But Engel was not done, as he had a “pick-six” at the 10:57 mark of the third quarter putting the game out of reach for the Knights. Now, back to that 26 yard run. Engel was completely engulfed by Knights after he ran to the sideline, and somehow escaped the pressure, and reversed fields to open space. With the help of blockers, Engel amazingly ran all the way into the end zone. On the stat sheet, it may have said 26 yards; but it was near 70 or 80 yards when you put into account all the scrambling he did.
The offensive line was brilliant all night for the Tigers as they allowed no sacks. The offensive line helped lead the Tigers to 373 yards of offense. All of the offensive yards came from rushing attempts, as Loveland only threw the ball once; an incompletion. Marlatt agreed saying “We knew that the one area we were better than Kings this year was along the offensive line. Our overall size, strength and experience on the offensive line was what would give us an opportunity to beat Kings for a second straight year. The War Pigs did not let us down.”
Sophomore running back Kylee Knabe was also clutch for the Tigers with two touchdowns. Knabe ran the ball eight times for 87 yards, including a 50-yarder. Knabe was complimented nicely by senior Isaac Spence who ran the ball a team high 13 times for 82 tough yards.
Loveland was 5 for 8 on third down conversions, and 1 for 2 on fourth down, leading
to a victory in the time of possession battle 24:25 to 23:35. The Special Teams unit was solid as well. “Special Teams were outstanding especially kick-off coverage,” said Marlatt. He complimented the play of Joel Mary, Mac Conners, Sander DiAngelis and Matt Eltringham. “They all deserve recognition for their play this week.” The coach said that the team has emphasized the importance of special teams, and many back-up players take great pride in being special teams role players. Marlatt said, “Coach Keith Rucker does an outstanding job with our special teams unit.”
“The Kings game is a huge rivalry and I am so happy that the Kings head Coach Andy Olds was able to return to coaching after his heart surgery for this important game,” said Marlatt. “I want to thank the Tiger fans that have supported us especially after the rough start to the 2009 season. We are now 2-2 and face a tough Wilmington Hurricane team this week. Wilmington High School has great athletes and are a scoring machine. We will have our work cut out.”
Wilmington is 3-1, with wins over Miami Trace (20-0), Chillicothe (42-20), and Edgewood (19-4). They lost their season opener 20-13 to West Carrolliton. Running back Quinten Rollins has totaled 361 yards in four games. Quarterback, Brandon Arehart has totaled 608 yards and completed 35 of 80 passes.
Loveland will next take on their last non-divisional team in Wilmington on September 25 at 7:30 PM. That will be the final game of this three-game road trip. The Tigers will then return home and start conference play with Glen Este for homecoming.
The Wilmington game is at Williams Stadium at Wilmington College.
