Loveland Volleyball Hoping To Close Out Year Strong

In the fall, most media and print cover football and soccer with all of their hearts, but leave out some of the most competitive action. One sport that is often left out is volleyball. Currently, Loveland sits with a record of 9-12, and 4-6 in conference. That is good enough for 4th place in the FAVC Buckeye Division.

Statistically speaking, senior standout Sam Burpee is fifth in the conference with 222 kills. Burpee also has a very nice .480 field percentage, and leads the Tigers with 40 aces, followed by seniors Joanna Myaka, and Ashley Dundes with 37.

Amber Peters leads Loveland with 19 digs, and is 4th in the FAVC Buckeye in that statistical category.

The playoff draw took place Sunday, and the Tigers drew the Amelia Barons. Loveland will face Amelia on Monday October 19th, at Lakota West High School. That game is at 7:30 PM.

If Loveland were to win, they would face #3 ranked Mount Notre Dame.

 

Boys: $2.8 Million Budget Cuts Possible Without State Budget Fix

Possible state-wide shortfall of $2.3 billion

LOVELAND, OHIO - In July when Governor Ted Strickland signed a balanced budget that had a $900 million gap on the red side, he and the legislature were counting on filling the hole with a plan to authorize video lottery terminals at Ohio’s seven racetracks. They estimated they would have brought in revenue from gambling of $851 million - for our schools.

However, the Ohio Supreme Court has since ruled that video lottery terminals are subject to referendum and opponents have a right to place the issue before voters. The decision is one Strickland doesn't agree with. He said, “It is a decision I disagree with, but I am obligated to abide by.” He said that it is now a practical impossibility to utilize video lottery revenue in the current budget. It reopened an $851 million hole, “placing our schools at risk of funding cuts and our budget at risk of imbalance.” Strickland said that waiting for a November 2010 referendum, even if it is unsuccessful, still denies the state the revenue “necessary to protect our schools from devastating funding cuts in this biennium.”

Strickland said he considered three options to make up the $851 million: raise taxes, such as the state sales tax, cut $851 million from Ohio schools over this biennium, or freeze the income tax rates at the 2008 level, postponing the final installment of a 4.2 percent reduction.

Strickland has chosen to pursue the third option. He said, “If the legislature adopts this proposal, Ohio taxpayers will continue to pay at a tax rate 16.8 percent less than it was in 2004. The state will collect approximately $844 million in revenue, close to the $851 million needed to protect education funding and balance the budget. The rest will be made up in cuts if necessary.”

Loveland School Superintendent, Dr. Kevin Boys told Loveland Magazine that if the legislature does nothing, without the video lottery money, the Loveland district would have to cut their budget by approximately 1.1 million dollars this current fiscal year, followed by an additional 1.7 million dollar reduction next year. Boys said, “This Governor has done everything within his executive power to protect funding for K-12 education in Ohio, but the recent court decision on the video lottery terminals has created a significant revenue shortfall in the state of Ohio.”

Strickland said he wants to freeze income tax rates so they remain exactly the same as last year. “If a family’s earnings are the same as in 2008, because of the slight increase in the personal exemption, they will still pay fewer taxes this year than they did last year.” What the Governor is proposing requires the legislature’s approval. “If no legislative action is taken, our schools will, by default, be forced to absorb $851 million in state cuts, and perhaps much more if federal resources are lost. The cost of not acting is clear.” According to the Department of Education, an $851 million cut to schools would put at risk the state’s ability to draw down federal funds. That means absent a federal waiver every school district would be cut an average of 10 percent in the current fiscal year and 15 percent in fiscal year 2011, for a total shortfall of $2.3 billion.

Boys said, “While no one certainly wants to see an income tax cut delayed, the alternative would mean serious budget cuts to schools throughout Ohio. He said that when Loveland's tax levy was passed last November, the Board believed they could maintain the existing programs in Loveland Schools for three years. He said, “That cannot happen if these state budget cuts come to fruition.”

November Leaf Pick-Up in Deerfield Township

Deerfield Township will pick up leaves beginning the week of November 2 through November 30, 2009.

Crews will pick up ONLY BAGGED LEAVES. Paper or plastic bags are preferred. To conserve space, please mulch leaves prior to bagging them. After mulching, place the bagged leaves, securely tied, in the grass berm in front of your residence. Please do not include grass clippings, twigs, rocks, etc. in the bags.

The Road Department will try to circulate throughout the Township bi-weekly, but please remember that weather and the number of bags to be picked up will play an important part in the collection. You may also bring bagged leaves to the Deerfield Township Road Department at 3378 Townsley Drive.

Please keep in mind that your trash hauler will also pick up bagged leaves and may be able to pick them up sooner than the Township crews. Your trash hauler will pick up bagged leaves as long as it doesn’t exceed their service level. To insure your leaves are picked up, please place them next to your trash on trash day for pick up by your trash hauler. If you have more bags than your service level allows, and wish the Township to pick them up, please set them away from your trash or set out on days when your normal trash is not picked up. The number of bags your trash hauler will take may vary depending upon your trash hauler, so please contact CSI at 771-4200 or Rumpke at 851-0122. Symmes Township Brush Drop-off

The Township will hold its last Brush Drop Off of the season on October 17, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During that time, residents may bring brush, limbs and bush and tree clippings to the Township Administration building for disposal. Leaves and grass clippings will not be accepted. Participants will be required to present proof of residency in the form of a driver's license or current utility bill.

Benefit Set for Homeless Animals in Clermont County

How much would you pay for a football signed by Cincinnati Bengals’ popular linebacker Rey Maualuga?  That is just one of the many incredible items available at the 16th annual Clermont County Humane Society Dinner and Auction.  The auction that benefits homeless animals in the county will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Noryln Manor in Batavia.  “The doors open and the silent auction begins at 5 p.m.; dinner is at 6:30 and the live auction is at 8,” said Nadora Hill with the Clermont County Humane Society.

Other items available at the auction include a four day/three night vacation in a beautiful vacation home on Norris Lake in Tennessee.  “This package includes accommodations, all meals, unlimited golf, and unlimited use of a boat and jet skis,” said Hill.  “The auction has something for everyone from Christmas items, pet products, jewelry, signed sports memorabilia, restaurant gift certificates, raffle baskets, split-the-pot, artwork by Imogene Farnsworth, and a Wii system with games.”

Proceeds from the auction are utilized to help operate the adoption center at the shelter.  In the past five years, the Clermont County Animal Shelter has provided almost 25,000 animals with shelter care; 5,000 of those animals were adopted into loving homes, and 1,600 of the animals were reunited with their families.

Amy Ferguson was asked at the Toronto Film Festival what the last favor she asked someone was.

Tigers Fall To Redskins

LOVELAND, OHIO - With all the positive momentum heading into the game vs. Anderson, the only real momentum the Tigers came out with was it was only 6 days until another game. Loveland High School held with Anderson for much of the first half, even taking the lead with 1:28 to go in the second half. But, that was all the scoreboard would light up for Loveland.

Anderson star running back Kyle Slater, a transfer from Glen Este High School Ran wild on the Tigers defense all night long. Slater totaled 21 carries for 198 yards, and 3 touchdowns en route to a 55-14 win over the Tigers.

Loveland was able to control the ball for most of the first half which was key in their short lived lead. Loveland was able to keep the ball out of Slater’s hands and keep it in the hands of playmaker Adam Engel. Engel scored both Loveland touchdowns from 3, and 19 yards. Engel ended up with 82 yards on 15 attempts. You have to give credit where credit is due, and Anderson did a nice job of containing Engel all night long; doing something no team has done vs. Loveland so far this year.

One key stat in the game was that Anderson was only 2 for 7 on third down conversions. But, the FAVC buckeye leading Redskins were 5-6 on fourth downs, and that is were most of the damage came.

All you can do is move on, and learn from this game if you are Loveland. I think the bottom line, is that Anderson is a very, very good football team, and even on Loveland’s best night, it may not have been enough. But, as I said in the early going of this year, Loveland plays a brutal schedule, which is only positive for the athletes.

When I had a brief conversation with Tigers head coach Andrew Marlatt this week, he told me that he feels one of his team’s faults may be their inconsistency. Marlatt exclaimed that the Tigers can be excellent one evening, but fail to show 100% effort in another contest. Marlatt also said that he wishes he could have the Turpin and Lebanon games because he feels that his team matches up well them, and that Loveland was just put out of the game too quickly for a team of this talent not to compete.

Loveland will next travel to Harrison (or Eastern Indiana; which ever you prefer) who is 3-4 on the year, and in the cellar of the Buckeye division. Harrison recently was defeated by Milford 37-12, and by Winton Woods 35-12. Loveland will definitely be favored to win, but then again, the USA beat the Soviet Union in 1980, and Appalachian State beat Michigan. My point: it’s all a matter of executing.

$9 Million Grant Awarded to Clermont County

To Help Children In Need

CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO - “This is a great day for Clermont County children and their families,” said Clermont Department of Job and Family Services (DJFS) Director Tim McCartney.  The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has selected the Clermont County Mental Health and Recovery Board (MHRB) as one of 19 agencies from across the country to receive multi-million dollar grants to develop and expand care systems for children and youth with serious emotional disturbances, and provide support to their families.  “The MHRB will receive an almost $9 million grant to expand programs to help young people, between the ages of 3 and 21, with emotional and behavioral problems,” said Clermont MHRB Director Karen Scherra.  “It is the largest grant we’ve ever received!”  The grant was submitted, in collaboration with the Clermont DJFS, Family and Children First, Clermont Juvenile Court, and other local providers and child-service agencies.

“This grant comes at a time when our agency and many of our partner agencies are experiencing budget cuts and are concerned about the impact service cuts will have on the children and families they serve,” said Scherra.  “This grant will enable us to meet some of those needs, providing new and enhanced services.  Our goal is to intervene early when a child has mental health issues that, if left untreated, could lead to severe problems later in life.”

The grant monies will be divided over six years.  “The first year of the grant will focus on strategic planning, hiring around 29 administrative and clinical staff members, and training new and current staff members,” said Scherra.  “Ten additional staff members are expected to be hired as the program moves forward.”

“All children and families deserve to receive the services they need, when and where they need them, and to be on a “fast track” to success,” said Family and Children First Project Director Gretchen Behimer.  The so-called FAST TRAC strategy will be utilized to provide additional screening, consultation, and treatment of mental health problems for children in preschools and daycare facilities.  It will also enhance school-based and home-based prevention and treatment services, provide specialized treatment services for youth (aged 16 to 21), and include respite and other support for families.

“This grant will enable us to better serve the children and families in this county and to address behavioral and mental health issues early, before they result in lifelong problems,” said McCartney.

The Need is Great This Holiday Season

CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO - Can you sponsor a child this holiday season?  The Clermont County Community Toy Chest is looking for sponsors to provide gifts to 315 children who are in the care of the Clermont County Department of Job and Family Services.  “The children range in age from birth to 18 and we have wish lists to give sponsors to help them make purchases,” said Sanna Gast with the Community Toy Chest.  “This is a great opportunity for individuals, families, church groups, and businesses to join forces and make the holidays a little brighter for these children.”

Sponsors are given the child’s first name and age, his/her sizes, and items that are on the child’s wish list; each sponsor is also assigned a number that is to be used with the child’s name when the gift is wrapped.  Packages can either be delivered to Clermont County Children’s Protective Services offices, located at 2400 Clermont Center Drive in Batavia, or you can call (513) 732-7264 to arrange to have someone pick up the items.

“We have the biggest need for sponsors of children between the ages of 12 and 18,” said Gast.  “Examples of gifts that would be appreciated for the older age group are: video games, and gift certificates or gift cards to local stores.”

If you do not have the time to shop for a gift, but would still like to help a child, checks can be made payable to the Community Toy Chest.  These donations will be used to purchase gifts for children who are not sponsored, or who come into county care close to the holidays.  “Please remember that the need to help these children is year round,” said Gast.  “You can donate new items for birthdays, special events, and other times, to help a child get through a difficult period in his/her young life.”

Ohio’s Tax Climate Reaches New Milestone

COLUMBUS, OHIO - An ongoing, five-year effort to improve Ohio’s business tax climate reaches another milestone this week when the century-old corporation franchise tax comes to an end for the vast majority of Ohio corporations.
 
The final deadline to file 2009 corporation franchise tax returns is Thursday, Oct. 15. This deadline applies to corporations whose taxable year ended Dec. 31, 2008 that sought and received an extension from the Internal Revenue Service, a common practice by large businesses.

FAVC to Realign in 2010-2011

What follows is a press release from Fort Ancient Valley Commissioner, Steve Borich, relative to the re-alignment that will occur as result of Amelia leaving the FAVC:

The FAVC has voted to stay at 17 schools for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons when Amelia goes to the Southern Buckeye Conference. They have also voted to realign into two divisions for all sports except football which will remain with the present alignment. All schools will remain in their present divisions for football with the Cardinal division only having 5 schools.

The two divisions for all other sports will be based on an East-West division.

East: Anderson , Glen Este, Kings, Little Miami , Loveland , Milford , Turpin, Walnut Hills, Wilmington

West: Edgewood, Harrison, Mt. Healthy, Norwood , Northwest, Ross, Talawanda, Winton Woods

Next year (2009-2010) the FAVC will remain as it is currently aligned.

Loveland High School: 9th Harold Meyer Sportsmanship Award

LOVELAND, OHIO - For the ninth year, Loveland High School is the receipient of the Harold Meyer Sportsmanship Award by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

The award is for schools that demonstrate they have completed an eight-part program that promotes sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in their schools and communities. The awards began in 1992 and are named in honor of the late Harold A. Meyer, commissioner of the OHSAA from 1969 to 1977. Winners are presented a banner at a school assembly or athletic event.

The eight-part program schools are required to exhibit in order to be considered for the award include:

• A written Board of Education policy on sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in extracurricular activities;
• A broad-based sportsmanship, ethics and integrity committee to coordinate the planning and implementation of a sportsmanship, ethics and integrity program;
• Presentations throughout the school year to coaches, athletes, parents, fans and support groups emphasizing the school’s philosophy on sportsmanship, ethics and integrity;
• An ongoing campaign that promotes sportsmanship, ethics and integrity;
• An annual evaluation of all coaches in the areas of instruction and demonstration of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity;
• A procedure for receiving, investigating and acting upon complaints regarding sportsmanship, ethics and integrity;
• A plan for dealing with critical situations such as heated rivalries, overflow crowds and unruly spectators, and
• A program for acknowledging/rewarding examples of good sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.

City of Loveland Leaf Pick Up Schedule

Burning is prohibited by City Ordinance

LOVELAND, OHIO - The City of Loveland's annual fall leaf collection has begun.

Residents should rake leaves to a place near the street or curb. The City says, “Do not place leaf piles on the sidewalk, gutters, or roads.”

After the regular pickup schedule is complete, all leaves must be disposed of by being placed in containers at the curb for regular trash collection or composted in a bin.

The schedule calls for each neighborhood to have two collection periods.

Residents are requested to have leaves at the curb on the beginning date of the scheduled pick-up period in the following neighborhoods:

Chase Rahm has graduated from the Army ROTC

LOVELAND, OHIO - Loveland High School graduate Chase Rahm has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as "Operation Warrior Forge," at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash.

The 32 days of training provided Rahm with professional training and evaluation for all aspects of military life, administration and logistical support.  Although continued military training and leadership development is included in the curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet's officer potential as a leader by exercising their intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and physical stamina.  Rahm's command assesed his performance and progress in officer traits, qualities and professionalism while attending the course.

Cadets in their junior and senior year of college must complete the leadership development course.  Upon successful completion of the course, the ROTC program, and graduation from college, Rahm would be commissioned as second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, National Guard, or Reserve.

Rahm is the son of Steven and Cindy Rahm of Shallowbrook Court, Loveland, Ohio.

Boy’s Golf Tramples Through FAVC Buckeye Division

LOVELAND, OHIO - The boy’s golf team at Loveland High School has been one of the quiet successes in the recent years. Loveland has won, or shared the FAVC Buckeye division title in 5 out of the last 6 years. And, that continued this year, as Loveland went 5-0 in conference play, crowning them again champions.

Loveland returned all 6 starters from last years team, as the Tigers started out strong beating all 16 teams in the FAVC Pre Season Shootout at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.

Ryan Denney had been the leader from day one. Ryan, who made the Varsity team as a freshman has been one of the best players Loveland High School has ever seen. Ryan currently leads the FAVC in average with a 37.7 average per 9 holes of golf.

Ryan has been accompanied nicely by fellow seniors Logan Thomas, Mitch Louis, and Daniel Canada. All three who have contributed big rounds at the right times, and have remained a consistent part of this team.”

Thomas Rooney is a junior who is second on the team in average with a 38.4 average.

The Tigers won the Buckeye Division FAVC Tournament on with a score of 318, leading second place Milford who shot 334. Mitch Louis led all golfers with a score of 78. Ryan Denney and Thomas Rooney scored 79.

Denney (73) and Rooney (76) qualified for the District tournament to be held at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown on Wed. Oct. 14th.

The Tigers are coached by 2008 FAVC Coach of the Year, Andrew Fredette.

Gas/Electric Reconnect fee soars

State regulators have allowed gas and electric utilities to increase the price they charge to reconnect service - by 80 percent. That's a fee that hit more than 347-thousand Ohioans last year.
