Amanda L. Scheeler Graduates Air Force Basic Training

Air Force Airman Amanda L. Scheeler graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. She earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Scheeler is the daughter of Anita Flaim of Kent Drive, Milford, and graduated in 2008 from Milford High School.

Miami Township Trash Days and Drug Drop

MIAMI TOWNSHIP - On April 29 and 30, the Miami Township Service Department will have several trash dumpsters brought to the Civic Center parking lot for residents to drop off damaged or unwanted household goods. This would include furniture, toys, bikes, grills, concrete blocks, building or landscaping lumber, appliances, etc.  The MTPD will also be conduction a FREE & ANONYMOUS drug drop.

ITEMS THAT ARE NOT ACCEPTED include yard clippings, leaves, tires, wet paint, anti-freeze, or any hazardous materials.

There will also be an on-site paper shredding service and disposal of medication, motor oil, and lead batteries (alkaline and lithium batteries will not be accepted). Paper shredding will be available on Saturday, April 30th only.

Proof of residency in Miami Township is needed at the time of drop off. For additional information, contact the Service Department at 248-3728.

Proposed State Budget Once Again Reduces Library Funding

A news release from the Public Library Cincinnati and of Hamilton County

Governor Kasich introduced the Executive Budget March 15 and as expected it includes a proposal to further reduce State funding to public libraries. The reductions total 5% resulting in a loss of an additional $1.9 million dollars in annual State funding for our Library.

I’m sure everyone reading this message is aware of the extent of cuts public libraries have already sustained. State funding over the last decade has dropped by 30%. Over the same decade, Library use has increased by 23%. To continue operating with severely reduced funding, the Library has implemented cost savings measures including the $1 million a year realized with the reorganization of the Main Library. We have reduced staffing and hours, doubled overdue fines, and postponed or cancelled capital projects. To further stretch our dollars, the Library has sought out additional partnerships and collaborations with government agencies, nonprofits, media outlets, and area businesses. Even with these measures we would not have been able to keep all 40 of our branch libraries open without the new tax levy funding Hamilton County residents so generously supported.

At the same time funding was rapidly declining, more and more people have been using the Library, checking out books, accessing computers, using our job support resources, and attending programs. Demand for Library services over the past 10 years has grown more than 23%.

We understand the difficult financial position of the State and appreciate the efforts to keep public library funding cuts to a minimum. While we are relieved that the proposed cut to State Library funding is not greater, we cannot absorb this additional funding loss without further reductions in Library services. If the legislature adopts a budget that incorporates these public library funding reductions, we may be forced to merge branch libraries, reduce hours or make other cuts that impact our community. We simply cannot spend money we do not have.

The introduction of the Executive Budget is only the first step in the process. Both the House and the Senate will debate and ultimately pass budget bills. As of this writing the House has not yet drafted its budget bill. We are anxiously awaiting this bill to see what is proposed for public libraries. After passage in the House, the budget bill moves to the Senate. Once both chambers have passed a budget bill, any differences between the two will be decided by a conference committee. We expect the budget to be in place by July 1 and possibly earlier.

We will be present at budget hearings making sure our legislators know how crucial State funding is to the operation of our libraries. We may call upon you to write or call to express your support for public libraries and we hope you will.

Should our State funding be further reduced, be assured that we will do everything possible to keep our services accessible, affordable and available to all Hamilton County residents. We are committed to offering the very best in Library service and will do everything possible to prevent further reductions to public library funding.

Granny's Garden School Teaching in the Garden Camp

LOVELAND, OHIO - For the third consecutive summer, Granny’s Garden School in Loveland, Ohio, will offer its comprehensive “Teaching in the Garden Camp” for school garden developers. A part of the Schoolyard Nature Network, the camp will be held June 13 – 17 from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. each day. The majority of each day will be spent in the gardens and/or on the nature trail at Granny’s Garden School and includes the opportunity to actually work with students.  

The weeklong, outdoor camp will focus on practical, low-cost methods for establishing a school garden program and ways to integrate the garden with classroom curriculum objectives.

Featuring a variety of hands-on learning opportunities, the camp includes best practice guidelines, the practical application of teaching outdoors and the opportunity to share knowledge, expertise and challenges from a diverse group of educators.

Breakfast and lunch throughout the week and dinner on Thursday are included in the registration fee.  Breakfast is self-serve and lunch is a gourmet treat prepared by a local chef featuring produce from the gardens Thursday, author, chef and herbalist Rita Heikenfeld, will lead a cooking session featuring simple dishes that can be made with students using herbs and fresh produce.  After the lesson, the meal will be shared among camp participants.

Educators participating in the Teaching in the Gardens program are eligible to earn graduate credit from the University of Cincinnati, through the Economics Center for Education and Research.

Registration for the Teaching in the Garden camp is $500 and includes breakfast, lunch and five nights lodging at Grailville in Loveland, plus a variety of value-added items such as seeds, plants, lesson plants and floral and herb bouquets. Founded in 2002, Granny’s Garden School is the largest and most comprehensive school garden program in the Midwest. The schools are attended by approximately 1,700 students and feature more than 100 vegetables gardens, many flower gardens and a .75 mile nature trail.

Mallet Madness in Loveland Schools

LOVELAND, OHIO - This LOVELAND MAGAZINE VIDEO is a presentation before the Loveland School Board on March 15 by Loveland Elementary and Primary school musicians. The students, and music teachers Michele Henn and Kristen Planeaux demonstrated the ORFF method of music making. 

Planeaux describes the ORFF method, and Henn talks about the impact on student learning if this program is eliminated as a result of school funding cuts.

 

Serving Our Veterans, Armed Forces, and their Families

“The theme of this year’s observance of National County Government Month is Serving Our Veterans, Armed Forces, and their Families,” said Board of Clermont County Commissioners (BCC) President Ed Humphrey.  “We honor and thank all of our citizens who have and who continue to serve this great country through military service.”

“On Saturday, April 2, we invite veterans and their families to Eastgate Mall in Union Township to learn more about a number of agencies and services for veterans,” said BCC Vice President Bob Proud.  The Honoring Our Veterans and Their Families event will be held from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m.  For additional information about the event, contact Commissioner Proud at (513) 518-2230.

The Clermont County Veterans’ Services Office (CCVSO) provides a wide range of services and outreach for the county’s 15,000 plus veterans and their families.  “In 2010, service officers filed over 1,000 federal and state benefit applications and helped those veterans and their families receive almost $3 million,” said Clermont Veterans’ Services Office Director Dan Bare.  “Our office also helped 1,600 families with emergency financial assistance and provided over 1,160 trips to the VA hospital or VA clinic, free of charge, to veterans.  We are here to help these brave men and women and their families.”

The Clermont County Veterans' Service Office can assist veterans or their dependents in obtaining lost documents needed to file for federal, state, or county benefits.  These documents may include the DD 214 form, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, birth certificates, and medical records.

Of all the tragedies of war, none are greater than those that involve children. Caught in the crossfire or hit by a roadside bomb, children are often wounded but rarely receive the heroic, high tech medical care that our troops depend on.

Recently, we heard about a woman in Staten Island, New York, who has devoted herself to wounded children. Farewell to Sgt. Milt Rooms

  “Milt Rooms was born to be a Marine,” said his wife of 20 years, Bee Rooms.  “Milt was a true American hero,” added Clermont Veterans’ Services Senior Officer Frank Morrow.  “He was a perfect example of the Greatest Generation, the World War II veterans who sacrificed so much for our freedom.”  The 87-year-old Milford man died Friday, following a dinner with other members of the Marine Corps League veterans.  “He spent his last hours having fun with many of his close friends; he was surrounded by love,” said his wife.

Sgt. Milt Rooms was a fixture at numerous Clermont County events honoring veterans.  He often wore his Marine dress blues, a gift from his grandchildren.  “Although he was no longer able to march with the honor guard, he used his walker to be on the sidelines at veterans events to let everyone know how important it is to support our troops.  Milt told me that if they would have let him, he’d have joined his fellow Marines in Afghanistan,” said Bee.

Rooms served in many major battles of World War II, including Guam, Okinawa, and the Marshall Islands.  “His dad was a Marine and he was proud to follow in his footsteps,” said Bee.  “Milt was a class act,” added Morrow.  “My life, as well as many others in and out of the veteran’s community, has been enriched for having known such a fine gentleman.  I will cherish all of my personal memories with Milt and never forget him.”

Visitation for Sgt. Milt Rooms will be on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home, located at 741 Center Street in Milford.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2011, 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church of Milford, located at 1367 Woodville Pike.  “I just know Milt is in heaven directing all the other Marines around,” said Bee, smiling at the thought.

Rooms, Milton L., beloved husband of Bee Morton Rooms, devoted father of Jerald (Betty) Rooms and Bonnie (Ken) Hopper, step father of Barbara Stamper, Terri Winter and Chris (Becky) Richter, also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family members and friends. Friday, March 25, 2011, age 87 years. Resident of Milford, Ohio. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Milford, Thursday, March 31st at 11 AM. Visitation at Evans Funeral Home, Wednesday from 6 until 8 PM with Milford Masonic Lodge #54 and Scottish Rite Services beginning at 7:30 PM. Army Cadet Brian D. Tilly Graduates Airborne Jump School

Army Cadet Brian D. Tilly has graduated from the three-week airborne training course, also known as "jump school," at the U.S. Army Airborne School, Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

Tilly is a student at Ohio University, Athens and is the son of Phil and Jeanne Tilly of Tumbleweed Drive, Loveland. He graduated in 2008 from McNicholas High School, Cincinnati, Ohio.

During the first or ground week of training, Tilly underwent a rigorous, progressive physical training program and receive instruction in the theory of parachute jumping, safe landing falls, mock door exiting, and wearing a parachute harness and lateral drift apparatus.  The second or tower week of training includes jumping from a 34-foot tower, practical use of the swing landing trainer, suspended harness apparatus, mock door mass exiting procedures, and the 250-foot free tower jump.  In the final or jump week, Tilly completed five static-line parachute jumps which includes one day and one night jump off C-130 and C-141 transport aircraft.

The airborne school allows Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) cadets attending host colleges and universities to earn their jump wings.  After completing the course as qualified paratroopers, cadets return to their college or university ROTC program to pursue a commission of second lieutenant in the Army.

Benefit of Balancing Act Noted in Classes

Brent Cole walked into his seventh-period class at Heritage Middle School and headed toward the cluster of giant red and green balls. The 14-year-old eighth-grader rolled a red one to a desk, sat on the ball and started bouncing. His twin, Kent, was sitting nearby on a ball of his own.

The balls "are awesome," Brent said. "They help me focus and pay attention in class. I get my homework done much faster.

"I have more energy sitting on the ball than sitting on a chair."

Since January, a handful of students at Heritage in Westerville have been able to replace their desk chairs with physio balls, often used for core training in fitness classes. The idea is that giving students the freedom to roll, bounce and shimmy provides an outlet for movement that will help them focus, stay alert and perform better.   READ ON AT COLUMBUS DISPATCH...

Hillary Tipton NCAC Distance Runner of the Week

Oberlin College Senior, Hillary Tipton, a 2007 graduate of Cincinnati Country Day and resident of Miami Township was recently honored by being named the North Coast Athletic Conference Distance Runner of the Week. She ran a lifetime-best time of 10:48.16 in the 3,000 meters at Oberlin’s own Crimson and Gold Invitational.

At the time of the announcement, Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune, himself an Oberlin graduate, said to Oberlin Head Coach, Ray Appenheimer, “Please allow me the privilege to extend my personal congratulations, and that of the County, to Ms. Tipton for her stellar 3000 Meter run and NCAC Distance Runner of the Week honors.  We take great pride as the County’s sons and daughters excel and bring honor to themselves and family, to their Teams and in the process, to their hometowns. In Response to 50 Percent Cut in Agency Budget for Next Fiscal Biennium

COLUMBUS, Ohio – March 15, 2011 – In response to today's announcement for a 50 percent budget cut for the Office of the Ohio Consumers' Counsel, the state advocate for more than 4.5 million residential customer households, Consumers' Counsel Janine Migden Ostrander issued the following statements:

• We are disappointed in today's announcement about the OCC budget. However, we look forward to working with state officials to demonstrate the value that the OCC provides to the citizens of Ohio and restoring our budget.
• The Office of the Ohio Consumers' Counsel (OCC) is a statewide agency created by law in 1976 to represent the interests of Ohio's 4.5 million residential customers in matters relating to their public utility services – electric, natural gas, telephone and water.
• The OCC is non-GRF, receiving absolutely no funding from the General Revenue Fund. The OCC is funded from utility assessments exclusively. Cutting the agency budget will not in any way resolve the State of Ohio budget deficit.
• Since I became Consumers' Counsel in 2004, the OCC budget has decreased by 8.5 percent and its case load has increased by 118 percent.
• Over the last biennium, the OCC's advocacy has provided customers with approximately $54.5 million in direct financial savings; and approximately $1.9 billion in financial savings due to our work with other partner organizations where the OCC took a lead role. This is money that stays in the pocketbooks of Ohioans, which helps to grow Ohio's economy. Since being created, the OCC has saved Ohio's residential utility customers more than $10 billion.
• The OCC provides unique services as Ohio consumers' utility advocate in legal proceedings where billions of their hard-earned dollars are at stake.
• While the PUCO works to balance the interests of all stakeholders, only the OCC advocates exclusively on behalf of the customers who pay the utility bills. The OCC's efforts not only protect residential customers, but also contribute to making Ohio a more business-friendly state.
• Given that utility service is a necessity that people cannot live without, the work of the OCC is very important.
• The OCC provides concrete benefits that save money not only for residential customers, but also for commercial and industrial customers.

Cooking with Type Two Diabetes: Disclosing the Truth and Lies

Maintaining a healthy diet plan is vital to our overall health and wellbeing. Eating the proper foods help us combat illness, reduce stress, and provide assistance to prevent serious disease. Myth 1: Diabetes is caused by consuming too much sugar

Myth 3: Diabetics must consume special diabetic foods

A healthy diet plan for those with type II diabetes is extremely similar to a healthy diet for anybody - limit the fats, use salt and sugar in moderation, and consume whole grain foods. Lean protein, vegetable, and fruit also help complete a balanced diet. Many foods marketed as "diabetic" foods still often raise glucose levels in the blood.

Myth 4: Carbohydrates are dangerous for diabetics

Starches are an essential part of a balanced diet. Carbs may have a significant effect on blood glucose levels, so they should be consumed in moderation. Carbs contain essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fiber, so eradicating them from the diet is not a healthy idea.

Myth 5: Fruit can be consumed freely because it's healthy and natural

Although fruit is chocked full of nutrients, consuming an excessive amount of it, especially simultaneously can prove problematic. Also, dried fruits like dates could possibly be high in fat and abundant in calories. Fruits such as these should only be eaten without excess.

Now that the myths about the diet for those with type II diabetes have been exposed, diabetics and non-diabetics alike can make wise decisions regarding food. Coupled with proper medical care and exercise, food can continue to be a necessary tool to maintain our bodies healthy.

Grannygram: Seeking 600 plastic grocery bags for a garden project

From Granny's Gardens: Our third grade students are propagating mums from cuttings.  

Each child will plant two pots, one to take home and another to donate to other school garden programs.  We need the plastic grocery bags to create mini green houses to keep the cuttings moist while they develop roots.  Please drop bags off in front of the green barn in the front courtyard of the primary and elementary schools.  Directions.

Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce Offers Two $1,000 Scholarships

Dear Loveland Magazine Readers,

The Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is pleased to announce the availability of two scholarships of $1,000 each, available to two graduating seniors residing in the Loveland City School District.

One of the two scholarships awarded by the Chamber is the Patricia Furterer Scholarship Award, given to an individual majoring in an arts-related field, who best exemplifies the character of Patricia Furterer, a long-time resident, former Executive Director of the Chamber, 2002 Valentine Lady, Loveland Stage Company Producer, and Loveland promoter and enthusiast.

The other of the two scholarships, The Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship, is awarded to a student who demonstrates the ability to succeed academically and manifests a personal commitment to community reflected in their activities and local service projects.

The scholarship application has been sent to all participating high schools, and is available at the Chamber office and on our Website, www.lovelandchamber.org.  Interested students should contact the Guidance Department at their respective schools.  Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee using a process which conceals the identity of all applicants.

Bethesda North Hospital’s Maternity Unit Celebrates 20 Years

Bethesda North Maternity will celebrate its 20-year anniversary on April 2. When the Maternity Unit first opened, it was expected to have no more than 75 deliveries per month. Within the first couple of months of being open, the unit quickly surpassed that number. Now, with more than 4,000 deliveries each year, Bethesda North is the leading provider of maternity services in Cincinnati’s northern corridor and the seventh largest in the state of Ohio.

To accommodate the increase in deliveries, renovations have taken place over the years in several of the Maternity areas at Bethesda North. The most recent renovations include the Harold and Margret Thomas Special Care Nursery and the Postpartum Unit in 2009.

Ryan Widmer’s Fate in the Hands of Judge Following Confusing Testimony

LEBANON — The decision to acquit or grant Ryan Widmer a new trial is in the hands of the judge who oversaw the three trials for the convicted murderer.

Judge Neal Bronson listened to testimony and arguments from both sides Wednesday on the defense’s request to free Widmer or re-try him for the fourth time.

No Drugs Found in Sweep at Little Miami High School

MORROW, OHIO - Using a K-9 unit trained to detect drugs, several local law enforcement agencies conducted a sweep of Little Miami High School. The search, which included classrooms, school lockers, and vehicles parked on school property, uncovered no drugs on the high school campus.

The school building was locked down, and no student was allowed in the halls or to walk on school grounds while the dogs performed the search.

"We are pleased to report a clean sweep of both the school and the parking lot," said Little Miami High School Principal Brian Martin. "Every locker and every car in the parking lot was searched."

Police conduct several random drug sweeps each year as part of a safety plan at the school.

"Little Miami has partnered with local law enforcement not only to keep drugs off campus, but also to send the message that we won’t tolerate drugs in our schools," said Superintendent Dan Bennett. "School is a safe place, and it is efforts like this that keep it that way."

Children's Meeting House Montessori School Offers Three Summer Camps

Children's Meeting House Montessori School is offering three summer camps for pre-K through 6th grade children.  Summer camps are specially designed to expose children to the nature through a wealth of hands on experiences.  These camps are a great way to stimulate a child's mind, keep children active, and create new bonds of friendship.

Arts and Movement Camp (July 11 - 15) nurtures the creative spirit in children while giving them space to move and explore the natural world.  Children will have the opportunity to explore rhythm and voice, experience stretching and balance in yoga, and create hand made pottery.

CMH School's second camp (July 18-22) focuses on native birds.  At Bird Camp, children will go on daily bird walks, learn about bird adaptations, and learn to identify bird calls.  A Master Bird Bander will use a nearly invisible mist net that will catch dozens of native song birds.  The chance to see and touch these amazing birds up close is an experience campers will never forget.

The week of July 25-29, CMH School will have a Sky is the Limit Camp answering questions such as why the sky looks blue or why does it rain.  Campers can use the SKY LAB portable planetarium to examine the night sky and its stars and constellations.  Children will explore the daytime sky to investigate such concepts as precipitation, wind, seasons, and the different types of clouds.

All three camps are lead by specially trained teachers and naturalists.  Parents can choose either half day or full day for either camp.

This is a great story! (What About Those New $33,000 School Signs?)  Thanks for sharing.... especially at this important time as we are looking to pass our school levy. Having been out of the school system for quite some time we had no idea of what the PTA does/has been doing now. Terrific! Important for our community to know.

As you know Bob and I are very strong supporters of our school system with having young people having gone through the system. Yes, we're older. Yes, I'm retired. Bob is not. But the education of our young people is so important as they are the future leaders of our country.
