William Smith, is running as a Democrat for the Ohio 2nd Congressional seat that will be vacated by Jean Schmidt. He will face Republican Brad Wenstrup in November.
This is the first interview Smith has granted since immediately following his victory in the March Primary.
Smith is the “Unknown” candidate that barely a seasoned politician had heard of, and most still don’t know. Democratic party leaders here in Hamilton and Clermont County admitted the morning after Smith’s surprise election win that they did not know him, and in fact never spoken to him. No photos were available for publication.
As part of a longer in-depth interview (Will Voters of Ohio 2nd Congressional District Send William Smith to Washington?) about his candidacy, Smith shared his views on abortion and contraceptives. He talks about Planned Parenthood, abstinence, pre-Roe v. Wade, his belief in God, and shares a personal story about loved ones.
Smith said that if elected to Congress he would do nothing to prevent a women from getting birth control services.
Smith declares he is “Pro Life”, however said he doesn’t want the laws to go back to before Roe v. Wade. He believes that If you believe in God, “He is in control of the whole thing. And, how do you think you need to be the spokesman for God when you don’t know God’s will either?”
“If you believe that it says in the bible that absolutely all abortions should be prohibited and eliminate all forms of contraception... are these same people willing to put their money where there mouth is and put tax dollars into programs or contribute as individuals their own personal financial resources to see that these kids that come out of these unwanted pregnancies are raised, nurtured, educated? They’re not willing to do that with the ones we have.”
When asked about his core religious beliefs, Smith responded, “I don’t believe that I have the right to decide for her - that’s my core belief.”
Smith however favors the “Heartbeat Bill” proposed in Ohio. “I think the law they have brought forth here in Ohio, is pretty good one.” The bill would protect a fetus if a heartbeat is detected. Proponents of the bill say it will prevent almost every abortion in the State.
