"Earlier this evening, the Hamilton County Republican Party (GOP) Judicial Screening Committee met and unanimously recommended that Judge Heather Russell replace retiring Republican-endorsed Judge Dennis Helmick on the ballot in the 2012 in a race for the Court of Common Pleas. Russell enters a 4-person field race that includes a fellow Republican-endorsed candidate in former Cincinnati City Council candidate Leslie Ghiz and two endorsed Democrats.
Earlier this year, Judge Dennis Helmick announced his retirement leaving the Hamilton County GOP with the responsibility to replace him on the fall ballot. The recommendation of the Judicial Screening Committee now goes to the Executive Committee where Russell is expected to be formally placed on the ballot.
Russell has served as an Assistant Prosecutor in Hamilton County for over 16 years, and special prosecutor in Adams and Preble counties. In 1999, she was elected to the Loveland City Council and was appointed as the Chief of the Hamilton County Grand Jury. In 2002, Russell began her career on the bench as a Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge.
Russell graduated from Walnut Hills High School, Miami University and the UC College of Law, where she was a fellow in the Urban Morgan International Institute for Human Rights. She has lived in Loveland for 21 years with her husband and teenage sons.
