“These gold and proud employees,” is how Burke Byer, co-owner of Byer Steel described those seated behind the main stage. His Carthage recycling company hosted the visit on Tuesday morning of Vice Presidential hopeful Paul Ryan. Byer talked about the history of the company, back to when his grandfather immigrated from Russia in 1906, “In hope of a better life.” He also talked about 2012 and what he sees as government obstacles in the future continued success of his company. “Our foreign competition is not playing on the same playing field as we are.”
Republican hopeful for Ohio’s 2nd Congressional seat, Brad Wenstrup also whipped up the enthusiastic crowd of Ryan supporters. He said that when he was in Tampa for the Republican convention he was “sickened” as he drove by one by one building that had a Obama flag below a large American flag. Wenstrup said that the American flag was the “only one we need.”
Wenstrup also talked about and described as “sad” the recent events in Libya. He decried the Obama administration’s plans to cut the military by 100,000 troops. He said, “We cannot afford the high cost of weakness. We will not be weak, and we will not apologize to anyone.”
Wenstrup said, “The Obama health care plan will not work.” Speaking about Medicaid, he said that what started as a safety net has become a way of life for people.”
