There, he is helping teach advanced Japanese to college students. Bunk Headed to World Championship

Alex Bunk from Loveland is on the team composed of students from Lakota, Loveland, Mason and Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy which will compete at the FIRST Robotics World Championship in St. Louis in April.

Bunk, a Freshman at Loveland High School will compete against teams from around the world. Bunks’ roll is robot driver.

Last Saturday, the 2011-2012 First Tech Challenge Ohio Championship was held at iSpace on the Scarlet Oaks campus. First Tech Challenge is a robotics competition developed by FIRST comprising over 1,600 teams from the US, Canada, Mexico and other countries. The Ohio Championship consisted of 24 finalist robotics teams that had previously been selected from regional qualifying events in Cleveland and Columbus held last month consisting of over 50 teams. The championship is the culmination of six months of effort by teams to design, program and test their robots to meet the challenge criteria in this years "Bowled Over" challenge.
 
Bunk is on Team 4530 Infinite Resistance sponsored by SentriLock a Cincinnati based manufacturer of electronic access control products that placed first overall in the Ohio Championship.

The team has been invited to compete at the FIRST Robotics World Championship in St. Louis in April.

FIRST Robotics is catalyst for getting students interested and involved in science, technology, engineering and math. The program creates a challenging learning environment for these students to practice hands on involvement in designing and programming sophisticated machines to carry out tasks. The skills learned are directly applicable to real world devices they will be involved with designing, engineering and programming as technology professionals.
 
In addition to the technical challenge, teams work to create community outreach to promote science and engineering to other students. Team 4530, with its corporate sponsors of SentriLock , Christ Hospital, and Amerigroup participated in bringing robotics to inner city S.T.E.M. schools by donating Lego Mindstorms Kits and spending time teaching other students how to build and program as well as enabling students to go to iSpace camp.

Donated cookies will be delivered to Ronald McDonald House at Cincinnati Children's Hospital in memory of Lisa Nusbaum, a parishioner and Abby Streszoff, a student at SMOY, who both passed away from cancer.

Montessori Students Explore Poetry and Life as a Poet

Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students at Children's Meeting House Montessori School in Loveland had a unique poetry experience from the school's visiting Poet in Residence, Pauletta Hansel.  The students were immersed in poetry and discovered many fundamental elements of poetry such as rhythm, sound, and pattern.  Ms. Hansel commented, "I wanted to introduce poetry to the students in an approachable, hands-on manner.  It is an honor to guide them through the rich world of poetry and to give them another way to express their feelings, emotions, and to describe the world around them." 

 Children read many poems aloud, discussed what they liked about each, and what elements go into a good poem.  Teacher Dana Dale said, "This has been an extremely valuable experience for our students.  It has made them stronger writers and has allowed them to explore a side of themselves they hadn't before."

 The children wrote several poems and learned to use metaphors and sensorial perspective in their work. "The children were attentive, focused, and creative when they were writing, working to critique their work, or reading another student's poem," said Ms. Hansel.  The experience culminated in a special Poetry Reading where each child read at least one of their poems in front of fellow classmates, parents, and teachers.  In addition, the poems will be compiled in an anthology for the students to revisit and enjoy.

 Ms. Hansel, an award-winning poet, is a Poet in Residence at Thomas More College and active in the Urban Appalachian Council.  She is also the Program Coordinator at Grailville, where she teaches writing classes for both adults and children.  Grailville, located just east of downtown Loveland, offers programs, activities, workshops, and volunteer opportunities to bring about ecological sustainability, help connect people with one another, and to foster idea exchange and understanding.  More information about Grailville can be found at www.grailville.org.

Little Miami Wants to Reopen Butlerville Elementary and Maineville Elementary

 

Morrow, Ohio - Little Miami Local School District Board of Education members voted Tuesday to move forward with a reconfiguration plan for the 2012-2013 school year and to reopen Butlerville Elementary and Maineville Elementary schools.

“Last fall, we promised to restore the cuts most valued by the community, including neighborhood elementary schools, with passage of the levy,” said interim superintendent Greg Power.  “We intend to follow through.”

The state Financial Planning and Supervision Commission – the governing body with the final say on decisions made by the district while in fiscal emergency – will vote on the plan at their meeting Thursday, February 23 at 4 p.m. in the Little Miami High School auditorium.

Upon their approval, the district’s building configuration beginning this fall will be:

• Butlerville Elementary: All PK, K-2;
• Maineville Elementary: K-2;
• Salem Elementary: K-2, all 3-4;
• Little Miami Intermediate: All 5-6;
• Little Miami Junior High: All 7-8; Little Miami High: All 9-12.

Mr. Power explained opening the new buildings will allow space for the return of specials. Based on the current building configuration and enrollment numbers, Little Miami Junior High would house 922 students in grades 5-7 next year in a school built for 800.

“Remaining in the current grade-level configuration means the return of classroom-based art, music, and band will be nearly impossible for students in these three grades,” he explained. “Opening Butlerville and Maineville will ease overcrowding at the junior high and allow adequate classroom space for specials and future enrollment growth across the district.”

Treasurer Terry Gonda said the millage of the November 2011 levy included money to support the reconfiguration plan. He estimates the cost to reopen the two schools, staff the buildings, and actually move will cost the district approximately $2.1 million – with $1.4 million coming from the general fund and $700,000 from the permanent improvement, construction, and food service funds.

Remi Ochlik was born in eastern France in 1983. After graduating from high school, he went to Paris to study photography at Icart Photo school. He also started working for Wostok, a photography agency.

In 2004, at the age of 20, he went to Haiti to photograph riots surrounding the fall of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. It was Remi’s first conflict experience. The resulting work was awarded by the Francois Chalais Award for Young Reporters and was projected at Visa pour l’Image International Photojournalism Festival.

In 2005 he founded his own photography agency called IP3 PRESS, with the goal of covering news in Paris and conflicts around the world.

He covered the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2008, the cholera epidemic and presidential elections in Haiti in 2010.

In 2011, Remi photographed the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions and the uprising and war in Libya. His work is published in Le Monde Magazine, VSD, Paris Match, Time Magazine and The Wall Street Journal.

Loveland Men Start Tournament Saturday Against Lakota West

Loveland, Ohio - Loveland won their Senior Night game over Anderson last Friday night 61-52. Senior Anthony LaMacchia scored 17 with 5 for 9 from the 3-point arch. Loveland was led by Reid Waddell with a game high 19, including 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 1 blocked shot. Bryson McGillis contributed 9 points and 4 steals.

Loveland finished the regular season 7-9, 7-13.

The Tigers begin State tournament play this Saturday. They play Lakota West at Hamilton High School. Game time is 7 PM. Presale tickets are available for $6.00 from the Loveland Athletic Office ($7.00 at gate). Directions.

Lakota West finished third in the GMC, behind Middletown and Mason with a 11-3, 14-6 regular season record. They are led by 6'3", 165 lb. Junior,  Monty Boykins averaging 16.6 points.

LOVELAND MAGAZINE VIDEO: Sgt. Chris Tobias Welcomed Home a Loveland Hero

Loveland, Ohio - “It hit the heart to know that people cared,” is how Army Sergeant Chris Tobias described his homecoming reception from Afghanistan. Students, staff, the community, firefighters, politicians, and his former teachers formed a loop around the drive of the Loveland Elementary and Primary school and along Loveland Madeira Road last Thursday afternoon, and Tobias’ motorcade circled them all twice before stepping on the ground of his former school to a heroes welcome.

Chants of, USA... USA... USA...,” rang from the students. They rushed to give the Sergeant hugs, and handmade Valentines. Politicians rushed to be the first to shake his hand. Hugs and “Welcome home,” came from former teachers.

Inside, young Scouts received instructions on how to lead Tobias into the school gym; how to salute and present the colors.

Media from all over the ti-state jostled to get the best shot. Camera flashes all over. A Loveland/Symmes fire brigade came to ‘Attention’ and saluted. The fire department brought two ladder trucks, raised their arial ladders to full extension with a large draped “Old Glory” underneath.

Inside the gym, students recited the pledge and National Anthem. Tobias’ former teacher, Lt. Col. David Volkman, himself a veteran of service in Afghanistan and very, recently Iraq, spurred them on to shout as loud as they could, to be heard all the way to Loveland High School, where Tobias graduated in 2006 and was named, “Most Spirited.”

Volkman recalled that he called his former student, “Toby.”

“Welcome home Toby,” raised the school roof.

Volkmnan said later in an interview with Loveland Magazine that as Tobias' former Government teacher and a soldier himself, Tobias, “Was my kid too. His mom and dad have dibs on him, but and when your kid goes off to war... You worry about him.” Volkman said that he counseled Tobias about military service, and e-mailed him while he was in the war zone. Part of that time period, Volkman was also dispatched in Iraq.

During the formal ceremony in the gym, Volkman told the students that Tobias gives them “A blanket of freedom to sleep under every single night. He’s one of the guys making sure we have liberty and justice for all.”

Mary Tobias, a Media Aid at the Loveland Primary School talked to Loveland Magazine about what it was like to have good support from students and staff at her work place while her son was serving in a war zone.

In this video, Tobias talked about what the surprise welcome home was like. Patting his heart he said, “It hit the heart to know that people cared.” He described the community values he learned while growing up in Loveland. He also talks about his mission in Afghanistan, its people, and what he thinks the future holds for the war torn nation when the U.S. military presence is diminished.

Start Lenten Season at Epiphany United Methodist Church

Miami Township, Ohio - Epiphany United Methodist Church, located at 6635 Loveland-Miamiville Road, will be having multiple ways to start the Lenten Season.

Starting on February 21 at 6:30 PM and ending February 22 at 6 PM, there will be a 24-hour Prayer Vigil. Also on February 21, beginning at 5 PM the Youth Group will be sponsoring a Pancake Dinner for Shrove Thursday with all donations going to help support their mission trips.

There will be an Ash Wednesday Service on February 22 starting at 7 PM.  Following the service, there will be a light meal to break the fast for those fasting.

L.I.F.E. Participates Million Dollar Feinstein Challenge

Loveland, Ohio - Help L.I.F.E.  (Loveland Inter-Faith Effort) feed local families by donating to the food pantry during the time period of March 1 to April 30.  All donations made during this time will be increased due to their participation in the Feinstein $1 Million Challenge.

For the fifteenth consecutive year, Alan Shawn Feinstein will divide $1 million among hunger- fighting agencies nationwide.  The more donations made to LIFE,  the more of the Feinstein challenge money L.I.F.E.  will receive.  The $1 million is divided proportionally among participating agencies.  Only donations or pledges received from March 1 to April 30 can be counted toward the Feinstein challenge.   These donations can include cash, checks, food items (valued at $1 per item or pound), or pledges.  The L.I.F.E. food pantry will use money collected to buy food from the Freestore and elsewhere to keep the pantry stocked.

The L.I.F.E. food pantry, located at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church on the corner of Lebanon and West Loveland, serves clients who reside in the Loveland school district.  The L.I.F.E. food pantry serves an average of 175 families or 460 individuals per month.  This number is up from 73 families and 227 individuals in 2004.  Donations made to L.I.F.E. are used here in our community to help your neighbors. 

Mark all donations “Feinstein Challenge”.  Monetary donations may be mailed to L.I.F.E., 101 South Lebanon, Loveland, OH 45140.  L.I.F.E. is a 501(c) (3) organization as defined by the Internal Revenue Service, so all donations are tax deductible.  Donations of non-perishable food items marked “Feinstein Challenge” may be dropped off in the food pantry bins located just inside the main entrance of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Symmes Township, Ohio - Dinners are available every Friday in Lent, from February 24 until March 30 from  5:30 – 7:30 PM, served in the St. Margaret of York school cafeteria.
