Loveland Early Childhood Center students turn entrepreneurs for a lesson in commerce

Loveland, Ohio - Social studies lessons about goods and services came to life Wednesday, Feb. 6, for Loveland Early Childhood Center (LECC) first grade students, as multiple classes set up shop – literally.

 “The students selected their business partners, what good or service they would provide, made their own project, set prices and designed posters for their businesses,” explained Lisa Schmidt, LECC first grade teacher.

Schmidt was one of a team of teachers who managed the business class including Jen Bebout, Melanie Lauren and Karen Griffin; all worked under the guidance of Shawn Flick, a fellow first grade teacher who started this learning activity five years ago. The students bought and sold the items from each other along with parents, siblings and LECC staff members by using “Tiger Dollars” and change.

“This is an excellent way for the younger students to gain an understanding of the business world,” said Kyle Bush, LECC principal. “Our teachers brought big concepts to the students in a fun and exciting way; I’m very impressed with their efforts, and it was a perfect opportunity to have families come to class to really see the creative way our students are learning.”
