The Loveland Stage Company’s spring musical Thoroughly Modern Millie opens this month on March 8 and continues for three weekends.
Director Carissa Griffith used her training and experience in theater arts to skillfully unify an experienced and talented cast which delightfully romps through this high-spirited musical.
Award winning actor Bonnie Emmer convincingly portrays Millie, a small-town girl who travels to New York from Kansas to marry for money instead of love – a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were just entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Ms Emmer briskly dances and sings to convey Millie’s delight in the flapper lifestyle and fearlessly navigates this new modern age. She has plenty of help from Katie McCarthy as Millie’s new best friend, Miss Dorothy and award winning actor Nick Castle and a regional favorite Dan Docherty as leading men Jimmy Smith and Trevor Graydon.
Veteran Cathy Alter is a perfect villainess as Mrs. Meers who earns hisses from the audience along with her henchmen, John Sloan (Jud Fry in Oklahoma) as Ching Ho and Michelle Faulkner as Bun Foo. These actors are supported by an energetic ensemble of flappers, stenographers and male moderns. The bright jazzy dance numbers choreographed by Marjory Clegg are extremely engaging.
Ms Emmer, Dan Docherty and the ensemble will have the house wildly tapping with them during the Speed Test number. Music Director Jack Hasty’s attention to good enunciation with every note of the lyrics is evident when the cast sing in unison. This cohesive cast will have the audience humming the roaring twenties music all the way home and dancing the Charleston when they arrive there.
