At the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University, Loveland Heavyweight wrestler Andrew Alten (285 lbs.) brought home a state championship.
In addition to Alten, four other varsity wrestlers advanced to the state wrestling tournament, James Caniglia (12), Michael Weber (12), Seth Brennock (12), and Jordan Paul (10). Alten though, was the only one to win his weight class.
He beat Conan Jennings, a student from Centerville, in the final with a score of 3-2. This match was won because of one takedown and came on the heels of a quarterfinal match which went to double overtime.
He is the third person ever to win a state championship in wrestling for Loveland.
“Winning meant a lot because it basically put all of my hard work and dedication into a tangible form. I am ecstatic that I could represent Loveland wrestling at such a high level and am honored to have my name included with the other state champions like Dave Hansen and Ron Troyan,” said Alten.
“The center was filled to the brim and the sport lights were following us around the arena.” Alten said, describing the tournament. Though he was not surprised by the atmosphere because he wrestled in the state championship tournament his sophomore year. “It was a bit of an advantage to know what the surroundings were going to be like. (It helped) not getting too flustered with all the people in the stands.”
This is Alten’s second state championship this school year since he was an offensive lineman and a co-captain on the Tiger football team (Div. II). He also was the first wrestler in the program to obtain 50 wins in a season. He is also a captain of his wrestling team. Andrew's trip to the State Wrestling Meet was the second of his career. He also advanced as a sophomore.
Coach Switzer, head coach of the varsity wrestling team and also a history teacher, said, “It was a overwhelming and a bit surreal when Andrew won the state championship. It is such a great honor for him and me as a coach.”
Alten was also an Eastern Cincinnati Conference (ECC) Champ, Sectional Champ and the District Champion for the 2013-2014 season. He has committed to play football at Findlay. He is a four-time member of the high school Jazz Orchestra. His GPA is 4.1. He is two-time All Eastern Cincinnati Conference in football, 1st Team All Southwest Ohio Football, and 1st Team Ohio Football. This year he was named the Anthony Munoz Offensive Lineman of the Year
James Caniglia capped off his season placing 8th in the 170 pound weight class. Both Michael Weber and Seth Brennock won one match at the state tournament, and were just one match away from placing.
