Loveland, Ohio – Loveland Elementary School (LES) students heard about stories from Alaska Monday, Feb. 8, when Alaskan Author Shelley Gill presented to three packed assemblies. LES Teacher Laura Johnstone arranged the presentation.

“Last summer I traveled to Alaska to attend a teacher conference about the Iditarod, a race I have been using as a teaching tool in my classroom for many years,” said Johnstone. “While in Alaska I met many amazing teachers from around the country. One of the teachers was from Columbus, Ohio, and she emailed me asking if I’d like to have Shelley come to Ohio to share her books with the students here at LES along with her school in Columbus.”

Johnstone said five LES teachers use the Iditarod as a teaching tool.

“Not only were our third-grade students excited to hear an Alaskan author, but the fourth graders we taught last year were also super excited!” said Johnstone.
